WATERCOLOR OF SIOUX INDIAN BY GUSTAVE GARRETT (1882-1951). This portrait watercolor of a Sioux Indian depicts a brave with fur cap and three eagle feathers. The brave dressed in a blue shirt with a red bandanna. Titled in the upper left “Sioux Tribe” and then signed in the lower right “G. Garrett” with a circle beneath it and a dot and dated 1903. According to documentation accompanying the watercolor, this was the only student of noted Western artist, Henry Francois Farny. An old newspaper clipping from the Cincinnati Times/Star dated May 16, 1956 depicts a Mrs. Kaiser holding a watercolor of an Indian chief from a Sioux tribe captioned “. . . Painted by the well known Indian painter, Gustave H. Garrett, a pupil of Farny . . .”. The attached paperwork includes the image of Garret together with some information about him. The documentation indicates that Garrett and Farny went to South Dakota in the early 1900’s, and spent a few years there studying painting and sketching Indians, later returning to Cincinnati. Indeed this specific image appears to be of an Indian brave that Farny also painted. His depiction, however, significantly differently, appears to be quite certainly the same Indian. This is framed in a large antique gesso gold frame. SIZE: 9-1/2” high x 7-1/2” wide, size of image only. CONDITION: Watercolor appears to be in fine condition. 4-51353 (6,000-8,000)
