TRUNK OF MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS PURPORTEDLY BELONGING TO SIOUX CHIEF BIG KETTLE. 1820’s hide covered trunk 26-3/4” long x 13” wide x 11” high, with rawhide bound edges & brass tack decorations and heart shaped iron handles on each end with a simple iron lock on the front missing its hasp. The top of the lid has an oval tack decoration with the initials “BK” in the center. It has iron hinges and a maker’s label in the lid. Included with the lot is a small pipe hatchet with heart shaped cut out in the blade and diamond shaped haft with decorations, a very large spear point pipe hatchet with tack decorated diamond shaped haft with pewter inlays at the mouthpiece. The left side of the blade is stamped “To the Great Sioux Chief Big Kettle 1884” and on each side of the bowl base are the initials “BBWS”. Suspended from the haft is a beaded decoration on buckskin and red trade cloth. Also included is a seven strand beaded breastplate, a beaded buckskin pipe bag with pink, yellow, blue & black beads, fringed on three sides, a buckskin shirt with side ties and fringe, with beaded flaps in front & back and beadwork over the shoulders – at one time it was dyed red. Additionally included are ten silver trade type items consisting of crosses, a triangle and a silver gorget and other shapes. These items are all stamped with various initials and some have the Hudson Bay seated fox. The gorget is lightly engraved with stamped initials and “Missouri”. Age and authenticity of all of these items has not been determined. CONDITION: Trunk has lost most of its hair from the hide and the hinges are rusty. Lining is faded and worn. Rest of the merchandise appears to be fine and sound. Shirt is faded to a pinkish hue and is quite dry. 4-50928 JR1155 (3,000-5,000)
