(ca. 1927) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 25″ Dovetailed barrels with high narrow matted “Churchill” rib with gold inlay of “XXV” and Purdey type hidden third fastener extension are engraved “E. J. Churchill. (Gunmakers). Ltd.” and “39 to 42 Leicester Square. London.” on tops. Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with provisional proofs and SN. Case hardened full sidelock action features non-automatic safety (“Safe” inlaid in gold), loose front trigger, and hidden third fastener. Action and lockplates are engraved with about 70% coverage of very nicely cut shaded open scroll and rose bouquets. Bottom of action is engraved “Field model” surrounding “XXV” inlaid in gold. Both lockplates are engraved “E.J. Churchill”. Trigger plate, trigger guard, and top lever are blued, and engraved with matching scroll and rose bouquets. SN is on trigger guard tang. Nicely fiddle figured and lightly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over checkered wood butt, on 1-3/8″ wood extension, and features drop points, 22 LPI point pattern checkering with double line border, and vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.729, right -.729. Bore restrictions: left -.010, right -.009. Wall thickness: left -.025, right -.024. Accessories include 2-pc brass and rosewood ramrod with 2 Turk’s head brushes, as well as, E. J. Churchill marked snap caps and square oil bottle. CONDITION: Fine, as found. Bbls retain virtually all of what is probably an old high quality London re-black, with only a few marks and some silvering at muzzles. Action retains 50 – 60% original case color, silvered on beads and fences, and fading on bottom. Lockplates retain 70-80% of their case color with areas of abrasion from sanding of stock around edges. Trigger plate and top lever retain most of their original blue with thumbpiece silvering. Trigger guard is silvered on edges and behind bow from carrying and use. Stocks have been inexpertly refinished with rubbed on oil. Checkering has not been re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Bores are excellent, bright, and shiny, with one or two very minor light scattered pits in right bbl. Case leather is beginning to darken and has numerous scuffs especially on corners. Handle is partially detached. Interior cloth is good, with some holes worn through, and soiling from contact with gun. Partitions are somewhat loose, and case needs a good cleaning. One piece of cleaning rod is cracked. Other accessories are fine. Label is foxed, with a few minor compressions. A fast handling little bird gun which would profit from a bit of stock work. 4-40453 MGM7 (5,000-7,000)
