OUTSTANDING LAVISHLY CARVED WALNUT KNEE HOLE DESK. In two sections. The top section being a fitted gallery with drawers, cubby holes and doors. Bottom section having drawers and two cupboard doors. Top section: Each drawer having a spread wing owl handle with carved flower and vine front. The two central small doors relief carved with putti in different poses. Four 11” full figured putti separate the top section. Below which on the outside is a flat foot with serpent carving. The crest having two seated dragon finials and a central carving of two reclining nude women holding a shield. Bottom Section: Shaped gadroon edged top has three side by side drawers, each fitted with a gaping mouth devil mask and winged dragons. Below are two cupboard doors flanking the knee hole section which has a paneled molded edge interior. The doors are heavily carved with a nude figure holding a spider web and a woman holding a banner. Four 16” classical figures stand atop the four mask covered legs. The ends having similar carved details and panels. Last quarter of the 19th Century. SIZE: 55” h x 27-1/2” d x 64” w.
