LAVISHLY CARVED WALNUT SIDEBOARD WITH MERMAIDS. Three tier sideboard having outstanding carving. Top crest having opposing seated putti holding a shaped and scrolled shield with mask lion top. The crest stands on a shaped gadroon edged shelf supported by two fully formed 14” putti that stand atop lion figures. Back panel of the second tier has a relief carved panel with a chariot with classical figure being driven by a cherub holding the reins of two seahorses framed with scallop shells and scroll. The sides mounted with opposing 17” mermaids. This sits atop a larger shelf which is supported by four 20” standing putti with a back panel having a grotesque mask and carved leaf and geometric design panel. The base having a reclining nude woman with pierce and scroll carving. Side carved elements as well. Last quarter of the 19th Century. SIZE: 70” h x 55-1/2” w x 24” at deepest.
