*VERY FINE BOSS OVER-UNDER SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN. SN 6190. (1911) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. This beautifully balanced, dynamic gun has 28″ barrels. Top bbl is engraved “Boss & Co. 13. Dover Street. Piccadilly, London. England” and has raised vestigial rib at breech with lunate extension. Right side of top bbl and bottom bbl flat have London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Bottom flat is also stamped with SN. Bottom of bottom bbl is stamped with provisional proof and no. 7612. Factory records indicate that this gun was re-barreled in the late 1920’s with 28″ bbls. (Gun was originally furnished with 29″ bbls.) Bbls are also stamped with Whitworth Steel “sheaf of wheat” logos. Ejector bosses and rib extension have fine scroll engraving. Well sculpted and filed, famous Boss o-u case hardened action features automatic safety (“Safe” inlaid in gold), gold line tumbler end cocking indicators, and Boss single trigger. Action and lockplates have nearly full coverage of extremely well cut shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights. This engraving most probably was done by famed Boss engraver John Sumner. Lockplates are also engraved with “Boss & Co.” in riband. “Boss’s Patent no. 3307. 1909.” is on each side of the action above lockplate. “Boss’s Patent No. 11278″ is on trigger plate referring to single trigger patent. Blued small bow single beaded matching trigger guard has SN in shaded background on tang. Dark, broadly marbled and slightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/16″ over 7/8″ checkered ebonite extension. Factory records indicate original length of pull to be 13-1/2”. Wood on this gun measures 13-1/4″ and does not look to have been altered (a 1/4″ buttplate would equal original length). Stock features drop points and 22 LPI flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is a gold oval on toe line with initials “C.L.T.” engraved. (Toe line has been swamped by about 3/16 of an inch giving a very pleasing sweeping shape to the stock.) Matching one piece forend has Boss ejector housing and Anson release. Bottom of iron is engraved “Boss’s Patent No. 3308 1909.” referring to the ejectors. Bore diameter: top -.730, bottom -.730. Bore restrictions: top -.008, bottom -.029. Wall thickness: top -.030, bottom -.030. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-9/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 11 oz, LOP 14-1/16″. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain 95% of original blue, silvering slightly at muzzles with a few areas thinning, and with a few minor marks and rubs. Action retains 60% case color, thinning on high edges, and silvering on beads and bottom. Lockplates retain 90% case color, silvering on edges and toward tails. Trigger guard retains 50% of its original blue, silvered on beads, edges, and considerably on tang. Top lever retains most of its original blue, silvering on thumbpiece. Stocks retain most of their original finish with perhaps a bit of oil rubbed in over the years, with a number of small nicks and marks. Checkering has not been re-cut, shows light wear, and is slightly dirty. There are a few missing diamonds on grip on left side. Forend wood shows some heavy compressions, marks, and missing diamonds. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors very slightly out of time. Trigger works. Bores are excellent with no visible imperfections. An untouched example of this fine classic. If one could have only one gun … 4-40557 MGM61 (35,000-55,000)
