RARE L.C. SMITH A1 GRADE HAMMERLESS DAMASCUS DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 836. One of only 739 of this rare shotgun built in period 1892 to about 1913. It has 30” Damascus bbls choked FULL/FULL with tapered, concave, matted rib, sgl bead, crossbolt rib extension, ejectors & dbl triggers. Rib extension is engraved with maker’s name & address and it has “A1” stamped behind the forend lug and on the frame, under left lockplate. Mounted with exceptionally beautiful, exhibition grade, French or circassian walnut with deluxe checkered splinter forearm and a fleur-de-lis carved, replacement buttstock with serpentine grip cap, 14-1/4” over a decorative, hard rubber buttplate. Receiver & lockplates are beautifully engraved with a bird dog on each side and light foliate arabesque patterns and maker’s name on each lockplate. Bottom of frame is beautifully scalloped and triggerguard is engraved with a large “S”. Bbl flats are jeweled. Bore diameter: left – .723, right – .723. Bore restrictions: left – .038, right – .038. Wall thickness: left – .032, right – .029. Drop at heel: 2-1/4”, drop at comb: 1-1/2”. Weight: 7 lb. 13.76 oz. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this shotgun as an A1 grade, 12 ga. with 30” bbls finished Feb. 1893. CONDITION: Very fine. Overall retains about all of an extremely fine, professionally restored finish to both metal & wood with bright, brown Damascus pattern & brilliant case colors. Wood is sound with some minor crazing on buttstock and a scrape or two on right side with a few minor nicks & scratches. Ejectors are not functioning, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. 4-30181 JR165 (8,000-15,000)
