*RARE BOSS SIDELOCK EJECTOR 20 BORE GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 6638. (ca. 1920) Cal. 20 Bore. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 28-1/2″ Chopper lump barrels (verified by factory letter) are engraved “Boss & Co. 13. Dover Street. Piccadilly. London. W.” on narrow concave top rib. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 7/8 oz of shot, but are also stamped 2-3/4″. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN and “Boss”. Well scaled 20 ga. full sidelock action has nicely filed beads, gold line tumbler end cocking indicators, double triggers, and automatic safety (“Safe” inlaid in gold). Action and lockplates have nearly full coverage of very fine, well cut shaded open scroll with rose bouquet highlights in Boss style, and was probably the work of noted Boss engraver, Jack Sumner. “Boss & Co” is in serpentine riband with scroll terminations on front portion of each lockplate. Matching single beaded trigger guard has SN in semi-relief on tang. Dark, dense, somewhat marbled European walnut buttstock has “Prince of Wales” grip, and measures 14-3/4″ over checkered wood butt. Semi-flat top checkering is at 22 LPI with single line border. Stock features drop points, and a silver oval on toe line engraved “A.D.W Jr.”. Splinter forend has flat top 24 LPI checkering with mullered borders and Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.618, right -.618. Bore restrictions: left -.010, right -.006. Wall thickness: left -.024, right -.023. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-7/16″. Weight: 5 lbs. 6 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. Brown leather “Universal” case is embossed with “A.D.W. Jr.” on cover, and is lined with red cloth with red leather Abercrombie & Fitch label, with patent information referring to the case. Accessories include leather slip-on hand guard, nickel-plated vaseline jar, oil bottle, 3-pc “Powers” patented brass gun cleaner with oiler in handle, in its original bag, and newly-made horn-handled bow-tie pair of turnscrews. PROVENANCE: This fine little gun has had an interesting history, ordered in 1919 by Capt. O. Arthur. It was in America by 1920, and consigned to VL&D in NY. It was sold to Henry Graves, Jr. a prominent banker and art collector. Mr. Graves appears to be best known for his ownership of the most famous and complicated watch ever built, the Patek Philippe “Supercomplication” that sold for $10,000,000 in 1999. The gun went through various other owners until it was sold to Harold Stanley, one of the founders of Morgan Stanley, who owned it until 1964. This and more information is in letter from Griffin & Howe. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain virtually all of a fine quality satin re-black. Action and lockplates are a pleasing pewter gray. Engraving is sharp and clear. Trigger guard and top lever have been re-blued and are silvered on bead and thumbpiece. Engraving is very slightly washed. Stock retains most of its old rubbed oil finish, maintained over the years. Action is very slightly loose, with a glimmer of light evident at breech face. It may eventually need a simple re-joint. Ejectors are in time. Bores are excellent. Case leather has some rather large scuffs. Straps and handle are good. Interior is excellent but with some staining where breech end of bbls contact cloth. Accessories are excellent. A light fast handling gun. 4-40070 MGM79 (45,000-55,000)
