*JAMES PURDEY ROUND BODY SIDELOCK EJECTOR LIGHT GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 23047. (1926) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 25-1/2″ Chopper lump barrels are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel.” on low narrow concave game rib. Bbl flats have London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN. Bottom of left bbl is stamped “Choke” and with barrel makers initials “W.H.” (William Hill). Tube nos. “56208” and “56209” are on loop. Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action has rounded bar, and features automatic safety (“Safe” inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, dbl triggers with front trigger articulated, and raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators. Action and lockplates have about 85% coverage of meticulously cut small English shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights in typical Purdey house style. “J. Purdey & Sons London” is engraved on bottom of action. “J. Purdey & Sons” is engraved on each lockplate. Single beaded trigger guard has standard scroll engraving, with SN on long tang. Red toned nicely marbled and slightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15″ over checkered wood butt, and features drop points, 26 LPI flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. SN is stamped on inside of iron along with actioner’s initials “T.D” (Tom Davidson). Bore diameter: left -.735, right -.736. Bore restrictions: left -.006, right -.005. Wall thickness: left -.025., right -.025. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 2.6 oz, LOP 15″. Brady style toe under dark brown leather case with stitched leather corners has snap fastened canvas outer cover, and initials “DLR” embossed on lid, and on central leather medallion of cover. Case is lined in dark red cloth with black leather gold embossed Purdey label. Accessories include 2-pc ebony and brass Purdey marked cleaning rod, pair of snap caps, and Purdey marked square oil bottle. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a London quality satin re-black. Engraving has been picked up on rib. Sharp edges are slightly rounded. Action is a pleasing silver gray, with traces of orig case color in protected areas, and some mottling left on lockplates. Trigger guard, top lever, and safety have been re-blacked, and retain nearly all of that black. Engraving is very slightly washed. Buttstock appears to be a factory quality replacement with a few very minor marks, mostly on toe line, and a few dents in butt. Orig forend wood shows some wear with checkering re-cut. Action is just a bit loose. Bbls are slightly off face. Drop is good. Ejectors are slightly out of time. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Case leather is excellent, but showing a few minor marks. Interior cloth is fine with some glue in lid where an old label was detached. Accessories are very fine, except oil bottle shows some lifting of plating. Outer cover is fine. Exceptionally fast handling and well balanced. A fabulous grouse gun! 4-40553 MGM45 (17,500-27,500)
