AIR VICTORIA CROSS MEDAL GROUP, AND BOOKS. Significant medal group to RAF Captain Ferdinand “Freddie” Maurice Felix West. West was one of 19 British Empire aviators to win the Victoria Cross in World War I. Consists of West’s medal group in a red leatherette case with his full set of miniature medals, including the miniature Victoria Cross. Also in the group is West’s full-size Military Cross with his name engraved on the reverse. West won this Military Cross for his 23 April 1918 bombing and strafing run against German transports well behind enemy lines. Two books accompany this group: Winged Diplomat, The Life Story of Air Commodore “Freddie” West, VC, by P. R. Reid and For Valour, The Air VCs by Chaz Boyer, which contains the biography of West. There is also a special 60th anniversary envelope bearing West’s signature, issued in recognition of the VC award to West. When West died in 1988, he was the last surviving air VC of 1914-18.
