ROYAL FLYING CORPS PILOT GROUP. G. T. Hammond served in the British Army from 1914-20, first as an infantry soldier and later as a pilot. This grouping of war memorabilia consists of: 1) British commission to 2nd Lt. dated 27 May 1918. 2) two metal framed cases containing medals and insignia, one, with Hammond’s photograph, full-size ribbons and medals, including three named War Service medals and his 1919 named Afghanistan Campaign medal; also, his ribbon bar and three full-size regimental insignia and Royal Air Force cloth pilot’s wings. Measures 12” x 16”. The second case contains Hammond’s photograph, ribbon bar, miniature medal group, three regimental insignia, a victory medal ribbon with two lapel buttons, and a cloth set of Royal Air Force wings. Measures 6” x 12”. 3) wood artillery rule measuring 2” x 4”. 4) three-ring binder with photographs, documents, hand-written memoirs, and 4 cassette recordings of interviews relating to Hammond. 4) a hardbound edition The Bastard War by A. J. Barker, the history of the 1914-18 Mesopotamian War in which Hammond served. 5) a two-page letter to a friend at the front describing his service in that campaign.
