*VERY RARE L.C. SMITH DELUXE GRADE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 ga. SN FWE57153. Spectacular and rare shotgun with 30” steel bbls choked FULL/FULL with tapered, concave matted rib, single bead, crossbolt rib extension, ejectors & Hunter One-trigger. Mounted with exhibition quality circassian walnut with spectacular checkered & carved, in foliate and fleur-de-lis pattern, beavertail forearm & pistol grip stock, 14” over a serrated horn buttplate. Grip cap is relief carved with initials “DGE”. Receiver & all appended metal is spectacularly full coverage engraved with vignettes of two raised gold setters in a gold field scene and a raised gold pheasant on left lockplate with three raised gold flying ducks and raised gold marsh grass on right lockplate. Trigger plate has a raised gold partridge. In addition receiver has nine raised gold bouquets of flowers with another group of raised gold blossoms on trigger bow. It is all completely surrounded by fantastic detailed, intertwined foliate arabesque patterns. The opening lever has pierced file work in a foliate pattern and top tang has “SAFE” in gold. Edges of trigger bow are filed to match engraving pattern and trigger is checkered. Forend iron is engraved to match with a raised gold blossom & leaves near receiver. Inside of forend iron is also engraved to match. Fences have a raised rib around back diameters that extends over top of receiver, around rib extension slot. Bbls are engraved 2” up over chambers and have raised gold flowers & leaves at chamber ends with “L.C. SMITH DeLuxe GRADE” in gold on rib extension with a decorative gold band at the joint of rib & rib extension. Rib is marked “MADE TO ORDER / BY THE / HUNTER ARMS CO INC / FULTON N.Y.” Bbl flats, ejectors & breech face of bbls are nicely jeweled with serial number & grade engraved under left side. Serial number & grade are engraved on right side of water table. Inside of lockplates are jeweled and numbered to this shotgun with polished internal parts and fleur-de-lis pierced, filed covers. Bore diameter: left – .616, right – .615. Bore restrictions: left – .024, right – .026. Wall thickness: left – .023, right – .022. Drop at heel: 2-1/8”, drop at comb: 1-5/16”. Weight: 6 lbs. 10.56 oz. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this shotgun as a Deluxe grade 20 ga., featherweight with ejectors & one trigger with 30” bbls, shipped Sept. 12, 1923 to Von Lengerke & Antoine. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbls retain about all of a fine professional restored finish. Receiver & lockplates retain about 60-70% subtle orig case colors with the balance turning silver. Triggerguard retains about 90% orig blue, slightly thin on the bow. There is a hairline back of right lockplate, otherwise wood is sound with light handling & use marks and a couple of small bruises in checkering and a tiny crack on right side of lower tang and overall retains most of its beautiful hand rubbed oil finish.
