FINE EARLY OAK TANTALUS.

FINE EARLY OAK TANTALUS. This unusual item is made of quartersawn oak on a base 14” x 10-3/4”. It stands 12-3/4” high. It has space for three square decanters, one of which is missing. It has German silver trim on the top edges and around the front, over the lids with a shield on the top. The lock escutcheon is matching German silver. The front 2/3 of the box is stepped down and has a split lid that opens to reveal a boxwood insert divided into three compartments. There is a German silver button protruding from the center of the divider which, when depressed, releases a spring loaded hidden drawer in the bottom. The drawer is 1-1/4” deep with oak frame and boxwood bottom and dividers. CONDITION: Fine. Each of the folding lids has a small catch that fits into the mortised lock. Catch on the right side is broken and missing. Each side of the uprights has an open joint, otherwise the box is sound, shows light to moderate wear with a small ding or two here and there and retains most of its fine golden oak finish. Secret drawer protrudes slightly and is not so secret. Two remaining decanters are fine with their cut glass stoppers having only one or two small chips. 4-50939 JR1061 (400-700)
