RARE WESSON FIREARMS DOUBLE BARREL HAMMER SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 114. High grade model of this rare shotgun, one of only about 219 produced in period 1868-70. It has 29-7/8″ fine Damascus steel bbls with smooth concave tapered rib, sgl bead, doll’s head extension & extractor. Rib marked “WESSON FIREARMS CO SPRINGFIELD MASS.” & bottom of bbls each have the monograms of D.B. Wesson & D. Smith along with the caliber marking. Receiver is small, flat sided & well sculpted with beautiful Gustave Young intertwined foliate arabesque pattern engraving, rabbit ear style hammers without a nose & a knurled latch arm on top tang. It is mounted with highly figured marble cake French walnut with checkered articulated splinter forearm & checkered forearm panels. Stock is 14″ over a checkered engraved skeleton buttplate. This is one of the very rare marked models & in a particularly high grade. This was an advanced design for its time with a positive locking system & rebounding hammers. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbls retain 80-85% orig brown Damascus pattern with wear mostly over carry point. Receiver retains about 50-60% orig case colors with forend iron & top tang a gray patina. Trigger guard retains traces of orig blue with balance a gray patina. Buttplate is a gray patina. Latch spring is broken, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. 4-57557 JR379 (4,000-7,000)
