PAINTED RECTANGULAR STEAMER TRUNK. Canvas covered with oak ribs and metal corners with metal edges. Size: 28” long x 18” wide x 19-1/2” high. Painted in large letters on the top “BUFFALO BILL’S WILD WEST” and with a nicely detailed Indian Chief’s head and the name “J.W. SWEENY” on the front. The consignor purchased this trunk directly from Sweeny’s descendants in Paducah, KY. Contained in the trunk are a variety of items from Wild West Shows including a pair of light cotton pants with Boston maker label and the name “Anne Stavrou”. Stamped in red ink is “Pawnee Bill’s Wild West”. They are a greenish yellow color with red velvet beaded side panels and a velvet triangle at the bottom with 15 nickel buttons on each side. A small hand woven Indian blanket, two yellowish coarse linen dresses, one with suede fringe, a shell necklace with two badger teeth, a small round hand embroidered table cover with Indian friendship symbols, a damaged French made coronet, a battered tin canteen, an unusual long Keystone State bugle, a copper & brass military bugle, three powder horns, a stone axe with stick handle, two small ceremonial hatchets – one with pipe head, a blue & white performer’s Indian headdress with turkey & pheasant feathers, a 101 Ranch steer head boot jack, an 18” long ceremonial tin spear point, , a beaded sash on cardboard with red trade cloth, a beautifully beaded item with cowry shells, a pair of horsehide gauntlets – well worn, a pair of original dress Sargent chevrons, a pair of child’s beaded moccasins, a pair of nickeled spurs, a miniature lead canoe and a wonderful homemade doll. Also included are sixteen early reprint engravings of gentlemen, some signed, several duplicates. CONDITION: Generally, all the items are in about good condition, some showing use & wear, others with light stains & soil. Trunk top tray is missing and the lid support is detached, otherwise the trunk is fine showing light wear and scrapes to the paint. 4-50920 JR1148 (3,000-5,000)
