PAIR CLASSICAL REVIVAL CARVED MAHOGANY CONTINENTAL TUB CHAIRS. Second half 19th century. Each having ‘S’-scrolled molded crest rail applied with stamped brass rosettes, joined to scrolled arms, the ears with applied rosettes, continuing to carved hand grips in the form of a classical lady’s bust with headdress, above a draped leaf-carved bracket, incurved on the supports, the conforming upholstered leather back above the ‘D’-form seat, all brass studded, raised on square frontal legs, the rear legs backswept. SIZE: Each: 36-3/4″ h. of back x 25-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: From a southern Maine private collection. CONDITION: In very fine condition overall, the carving crisp and detailed, the color a rich brown. The leather upholstery intact, with minor surface scratches easily remedied with saddle soap or facsimile. 9-93131 (1,200-1,800)
