RARE MACNAUGHTON SKELETON ACTION DBL BBL DAMASCUS SHOTGUN WITH MCNAUGHTON GUN CASE. Cal. 12. SN 1408. Also known as “Bar-in-wood” action. This beautiful shotgun has 30″ very fine pattern Damascus bbls choked MOD / CYL, with smooth tapered concave rib, single bead, with 3rd fastener extension, ejectors, dbl lugs & dbl triggers. The rib has the makers name & address. It is nitro proved with 2 1/2″ chambers. The receiver is beautifully engraved with very fine foliate arabesque patterns & has the makers name & address in a ribbon across the top of the fences. It has the very long opening lever to facilitate the lever cocking feature, with automatic safety & a small glass window in the top tang to view the cocked indicators. The trigger plate is set entirely island-like in the bottom of the stock & is beautifully engraved to match. It is mounted with very highly figured, dark, burled, honey & chocolate, French walnut with checkered splinter forearm & straight stock 15″ over an added extension with checkered butt. There is a blank initial plate on the bottom. Accompanied by its original maker’s red felt-lined, leather trunk case with initials “A.L.C.” in lid and maker’s label inside lid. The bottom is compartmented for all the pieces of the gun with a 2-piece brass & wood cleaning rod and several empty compartments. Drop at heel: 2-1/2 , drop at comb: 1-3/4 . Bore restrictions: left .27- , right .003- . Wall thickness: left .025- , right .029- . Bore diameter: left .711- , right .734- . Weight: 6lbs 5.44oz. CONDITION: Very fine. Retains 98-99% of an extremely fine professional restoration. Bbls are a rich chocolate brown. Receiver and trigger plate are bright metal with sharp engraving, the trigger guard & opening lever are deep blue. Wood is sound with beautifully freshened checkering & a small spot of fill by the trigger guard. Mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bores. Consignor states he was shooting this fine little shotgun on a regular basis. Case is worn and soiled with frayed edges and loose stitching with worn-through hinge leather and some losses on the back side. The label is dark and oil-soaked, but completely legible.
