OUTSTANDING CASED PAIR OF JOHN MANTON DUELING PISTOLS WITH ORIGINAL LEATHER OUTER COVER. SN 8018/ 8018. Cal. .470. This exceptional pair of best quality pistols was made ca. 1822, and they embody the ultimate evolution of the flintlock. 10″ Octagonal twist barrels with bottom ribs have hair rifling. Top bbl flats are engraved ” – John Manton & Son” in script, and “DOVER STREET – ” in block capitals. Silver front beads are inset toward muzzles. Bottom flats of bbls are stamped with London proofs and SNs. Case hardened patent breeches have inset platinum touch holes with platinum lines inlaid fore and aft. Heat-blued U-notch sight blades are dovetailed through top flats. A quiver of arrows is engraved on upper left flats. SNs are stamped on hooks. Breech irons have flowing scroll engraving which is typical of Manton guns of this period. Locks have small French cocks, inset waterproof “V” pans with platinum line inlaid on bottoms, bridled frizzens engraved with “Jno Manton & Son Patent”, and roller frizzen springs with tear drop terminations. Lockplates, cocks and frizzens have feather engraved borders with some flowing scroll. “John Manton & Son” is engraved in copperplate script as well as “Patent” below pans. Blued trigger plates have pineapple finials. Trigger guards have stand of arms engraving and SNs, in rectangle at center. Very finely matched fiddle figured European walnut stocks, cut from transition of stump to root for strongest grain flow, have wrap-around 16 LPI square flat top checkering with mullered borders. Stocks have plain rounded butts, drop points, and vacant silver truncated rectangular crest plates at top of grip. Bbls attach with side nails through silver oval escutcheons, and the transition to bottom rib of bbl is horn. Thimbles are blued-steel. Mahogany ramrods have brass tips. SNs are stamped in bbl channels. Original mahogany case fastens with swinging brass hooks with inset brass D-ring carrying handle, and ivory lined keyhole, as is typical for Manton guns. Interior is lined with olive green baize with paper John Manton & Son, 6 Dover Street label. Two small compartment covers have ivory knobs, one of which is marked with SN in pencil. Case contains walnut T-handled turnscrew with wide blade (half of a bow-tie set), turned ebony cleaning brush with white horsehair bristles, steel “nutcracker” mold stamped “46” with makers mark “DP” and SN deeply stamped, and unmarked copper and brass combination powder flask, ball magazine, and flint container which fits in center compartment. There is also a combination ebony and Greenheart loading mallet/ worm / loading and cleaning rod. Two interchangeable ends to this rod are in smaller portion of central compartment, which also contains a key. Also included is the rare heavy leather outer case with stitched-in, wrapped leather handle on one end. The other end has double flap closure with straps. There is an old paper label on outer case printed “On His Majesty’s Service”, also, written in India ink on leather case is “the property of Sir George J. Booke Bart.” His address is there but mostly undecipherable. PROVENANCE: Included with guns are original John Manton information sheet describing patent self-priming gun locks. Also copies of THE MANTONS GUNMAKERS, and THE MANTONS SUPPLEMENT by W. Keith Neal and D. H. L. Black. These guns are not listed in either reference as extant. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. Bbls retain 80-90% of their original brown with areas of darkened due to stabilized oxidation. There is some pitting under the bbl of one gun. Patent breeches have nearly all their case hardening color, but again there is some darkening under bbl channels. Locks, hammers, and frizzens have most of their case hardening color, with one lock showing some cleaning near signature. Frizzen springs and safety bolts show nearly all of their fire-blue. Trigger plates and trigger guards show 90% of their charcoal blue, with some slight browning and silvering. Stocks are exceptionally fine with only a few minor marks. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Locks, safeties, and frizzens are crisp. Case is excellent with nearly all of its original finish, with a few areas lightening. There are also a few marks and rubs. Brass shows original lacquer, and is pleasingly toned. Interior of case is all original, and is excellent with cloth just slightly browned, from contact with guns. Label is very fine, clear, but slightly foxed, with two areas rubbed through from contact with frizzen pivots. Mold is excellent retaining most of its bright polish, with a few darker areas cleaned. Combination flask is fine. Loading mallet is very fine. Brush is missing one tuft of bristles. Outer cover is fair with closing flap detached, secondary flap partially detached and torn, and straps missing. Buckles are in place. Case remains mostly a light brown, with many stains and rubs.
