PAIR OF H. NOCK SILVER MOUNTED BRASS CANNON BARRELED OFFICERS PISTOLS WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 294/ 295. (ca. 1780) Cal. .565 (.785 at muzzles). 8″ Brass barrels are octagonal at rear, and transition to round with molded bands with pleasing banded cannon muzzles. Breech ends are stamped with London proofs, and are engraved with open scroll. Top flats are engraved “London”. Breech plugs are iron. Locks have long rebated tails, serpentine cocks, and bridled friction frizzens. Frizzen springs have teardrop terminations. Cocks and lockplates are nicely chamfered with double line borders. “H. Nock” is on lockplates under pans. Stock furniture is sterling silver marked for Birmingham, with date stamps between 1775 and 1778, as well as makers mark of “CF” (Charles Freeth). Sideplates are pierced and are cast in the shape of scrolled acanthus. Double beaded trigger guards have shell-on-pedestal finials. Crest plates at top of grips have semi-relief shell and acanthus motifs. Grip caps are grotesque masks. Multi-beaded ramrod pipes are also of silver. Greenheart ramrods have horn tips. Dense, European walnut stocks have typical relief carved shell at rear of bbl tangs, and are stamped with “294” or “295” on each gun, toward rear of sideplates. These numbers are also stamped on right side of grips near caps. Dovetailed mahogany case has inlet hook closure, as well as key lock. Two brass bands are inlet around case for strength. There is an inlet shield on top of lid with matching key escutcheon. Interior is lined with dark olive felt with paper Nock label. Interior has two hinged compartments with bone knobs, and hinged brass latches. Accessories include ebony loading rod with worm under brass tip, ebony handled turnscrew, 26-bore nutcracker bullet mold, with another walnut handled mold for swan shot, pewter oil bottle, and copper and brass combination powder flask, patchbox, and ball container. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel engravings show a pleasing amount of wear, and brass has toned. Locks show traces of case color. Silver shows just the right amount of wear, and is not heavily tarnished. Stocks show added finish and restoration on forepieces. Locks and frizzens are crisp. Exterior finish of older mahogany case has numerous marks and scratches. With what may be new partitions, interior has a new lining. Label is a reproduction. Loading rod, flask, oil bottle, and shot mold are old. Small mold and turnscrew are relatively new.
