FINE PAIR AS FOUND WOGDON AND BARTON DUELING PISTOLS WITH CASE. SN NSN. (ca. 1795) Cal. .531. 10″ Slightly swamped octagonal twist barrels are engraved “Wogdon & Barton London” on top flats. Touch holes are lined in gold. Silver front sights are dovetailed through tops of ribs. Breech irons have filed in V-notch rear sights with feather border engraving toward bbl, with shield and acanthus on tangs. Locks mount with two screws through small circular escutcheons, have rebated tails, bridled friction frizzens, and frizzen-springs have teardrop finials. Serpentine cocks have double line border engraving, as do lockplates, which are also engraved “Wogdon & Barton” under pans. Locks are fitted with rear sliding half-cock safeties. Blued steel, double beaded trigger guards have stylized pineapple finials. Bows are engraved in armorial motif. Grip caps are steel with some feather engraving. Dense walnut stocks extend to within 5/8″ of muzzles, and have classic flat-paneled grips. Bbls attach to forepieces with two keys, and no escutcheons. Greenheart ramrods mount through beaded pipes; one has horn tip, and no worm; the other a 2-1/2″ steel tip with steel worm at tail. What appears to be an original mahogany case has two inlet swinging hook closure with key lock. Lid has inset brass “C” handle engraved with initials “GN” (?). Interior is lined with green cloth which has faded to golden yellow on lid, and where it has been exposed to light for a number of years. There is a heavy paper label affixed to inside of lid with thumbtack, describing these pistols. Inside case are two lidded compartments, with mahogany covers and ring handles. Accessories include greenheart and brass loading/ cleaning rod, small wad punch marked “Palmer”, nutcracker type mold stamped “34”, and small bag-shaped leather covered powder flask with brass top and spout. There is also a small powder dipper for priming, a vent pick, and a small hand-sewn leather ball pouch. PROVENANCE: Bill of sale from Solow Galleries dated 1962. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain considerable amount of original brown pattern. Breech irons and locks have considerable amount of original case hardening in protected areas. Trigger guards and grip caps have most of their original charcoal blue, with some flaking and silvering. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original oil finish, and are quite pleasing. Bores are excellent. Patent breeches are bright. One gun is exceptionally fine, and complete. The other has a repaired crack on right side of forepiece, and has a small piece missing approximately 1-1/2″ x 3/16″ near muzzle. Same gun has had cock replaced a very long time ago, probably during period of use. Locks and frizzens are crisp. Case is fine, exterior probably re-finished, with a few cracks and marks. Tip of hook on left side is broken. Interior cloth shows some insect damage, and as stated before, is considerably faded. Cloth under note in lid is dark. Center partition is separated and needs attention. Sides of one compartment are broken out. Accessories are fine. Ball pouch needs to be re-stitched. These lovely pistols have been laying without attention for a number of years, and could use a good dusting. 4-40859 MGM121 (8,000-12,000)
