ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This lot is accompanied by a signed affidavit from the consignor stating his Father purchased the cased set in 1952 from noted NY dealer Glode M. Requa. Also a copy of Requa’s Catalogue No. 26 and a handwritten description of the guns from the buyer’s ledger book with the price paid as $275.

PAIR OF JOHN MANTON PERCUSSION DUELING PISTOLS IN ORIGINAL CASE. SN 10241/ 10241. (ca. 1831) Cal. .480 with hair rifling. 10″ Full octagon twist barrels with under-ribs are engraved in copperplate script, “John Manton and Son Dover Street” on top flats. Barleycorn silver front sights are mortised into bbls. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs and London proofs. Percussion patent breeches are stamped with SNs, proofs, and are engraved with open flowing scrolled acanthus and have sunburst engraved vented platinum “blow-outs”. Breech irons have U-notch rear sights filed in, and are engraved with shaded open scrolled acanthus. Flat lockplates have typical Manton squared tails, flat-faced serpentine hammers and sliding safeties that engage at half cock. Lockplates and hammers are engraved with finely cut open shaded scrolled acanthus with floral terminations. “Jno. Manton & Son Patent” is on lockplates. Hammers terminate in stylized dolphin heads. Trigger plates have scroll engraved stylized pineapple finials. Trigger guards have matching engraving on bows, and SNs on tangs. Dense walnut stocks have steel capped bag grips with flat top wrap-around checkering with mullered borders. Vacant silver rectangles with cut corners are at top of grips. Forepieces mount to bbls with side nail sliding through silver oval escutcheons. Stocks transition to bbl ribs with horn tips. Mahogany ramrods with brass tips mount with single plain pipe on ribs, and nicely filed tailpipes. Makers mahogany case has inlet swinging hook closures with key lock, and with ivory escutcheon around key hole, folding D-ring handle is inlet in top. Interior is lined in green baize, with paper John Manton Dover Street label in lid, overlaid by an Andrew Wight label. There are pencil notations on labels, one of which reads “Cleaned by C. Bolt ? on the 3rd June 1864, 38 Jermyn St.” Accessories include James Dixon Sheffield pewter oil bottle, ebony handled nipple wrench with pricker, brass and ebony cleaning/ loading rod with leather faced rosewood mallet head, copper-bodied brass-topped combination powder and ball flask, tin box of Eley Brothers caps, some balls, and two brass tags no. 2600 and 2601 which were probably old collection nos. CONDITION: Very good. All metal has been cleaned to bright, possibly by Mr. Bolt in 1864. Wood retains a considerable amount of its French polish finish with numerous marks, knocks, dings and dents from handling and use over the years. Small sliver of horn is missing from right forepiece of one gun. Bores are fine. Locks are crisp. Case is fine, retaining most of its original exterior finish, with numerous marks and scratches. Lid has shrunk about 1/16″. Interior cloth is very good with marks, compressions and minor tears from contact with guns. Interior is absolutely original and looks “right”. Label is fine, turning brown, with some staining, and aforementioned penciled in information. Accessories are good.
