MOORE AND WOODWARD PERCUSSION GAME GUN WITH GRIP SAFETY. SN 2462. Cal. 14ga. 30″ Skelp twist bbls are engraved “Moore & Woodward. 64. St.James’s Street. London” on wide elevated concave top rib w/ London provisional and view proofs, “15”, SN “2462” on bottoms. Breech plugs are stamped w/ SN on hooks, and have unvented platinum blow outs w/ scroll engraving at breech end. Mahogany ramrod has brass tips w/ worm under rear cap. Island front action locks are engraved w/ beautifully executed open scroll and “C. Moore’s Patent”. Unusually filed robust hammers have matching scroll engraving. Breech iron is engraved w/ more matching open scroll. Trigger guard and safety have scroll and no. 2462 engraved on grip. Pineapple has shell motif. Scroll on the thimble. Bbls are fastened w/ side nail through silver escutcheons. Figured stock measures 14-1/2″ over steel butt plate w/ scroll engraved long tang. Checkering is 16 LPI w/ mullered borders. There’s a gold shield at the top of the wrist engraved w/ a “K” and a baron’s crown. Bore diameter: left -.712, right -712. Bore restrictions: left -000, right -000. Drop at heel:2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 7 lbs 4.5oz. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 60-70% Damascus finish, turning brown. Breech plugs have case color in protected areas. Nipples are pitted. Bores are bright and shiny. Lock plates retain 20-30% case color turning brown. Trigger guard retains 20-30% blue, as does butt plate. Stocks retain a good portion of orig varnish, thinning and darkening around grip and heel w/ numerous dings and scratches. Moore and Woodward was a partnership that preceded James Woodward and Sons. It is speculated that Woodwards Serial numbers continued from the Moore and Woodward system. Unfortunately the records do not exist.
