FINE JOHN MANTON PERCUSSION GAME GUN. SN 11329. Cal. 12 Ga. 28″ Twist barrels are engraved “John Manton & Son Dover Street London” in copper-plate script on wide raised concave rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with proofs, SN, and “13”. What may be the original ramrod with brass tulip head and tail with steel worm under cap, is held by two plain twist pipes. Patent breech plugs have SNs on hooks, and are fitted with engraved vented platinum “blow-outs”, original hexagonal bolstered nipples mount in unusual “central fire” deep dished seats, acting as fences. Breech iron is engraved with some open shaded scroll and a shore bird. Front acting locks have broad flat serpentine hammers, the heads of which are deeply cupped, and shrouded to the sides matching with dished fences. Lockplates are engraved with very finely cut large open scroll with leaf border surrounding classic vignettes of game; a trio of pheasants on left, and cock and hen black grouse on right. Sides of hammers are engraved with more open scroll and heads have acanthus leaves. “Jno. Manton & Son Patent” is on each lockplate under bbl. Trigger plate ends in classic pineapple, as does tail pipe. Trigger guard is engraved with pointer on bow, and trio of pheasants on long tang, with SN in a small oval toward rear. Dark and dense, slightly crotch-figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-9/16″ over long tang teel buttplate. Stock features drop points and 18 LPI flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is a silver rectangular crest plate at top of grip which is considerably worn, but appears to depict a stag passant surmounted by a crown. Forend attaches to bbl with side nail through oval silver escutcheons. SN is stamped in bbl channel. Bore diameter: left -.734, right -.734. Bore restrictions: left -000, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.037, right -.042. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-9/16″. Weight: 7 lbs. 15.8 oz, LOP 14-9/16″. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 80% of original brown, with areas of silvering, and discoloration from cleaned oxidation. Lockplates and hammers retain perhaps 30% of their original case color, but are mostly a pleasing silver gray. Trigger guard has a considerable amount of its charcoal blue; buttplate tang has traces. Stocks retain most of what was probably a re-finish, with edges slightly rounded, with numerous small marks and dings. Locks are crisp. Bores are very fine, only slightly frosted. A fine gun by an exceptionally fine maker. 4-40627 MGM92 (6,500-8,500)
