PAIR OF JOHN MANTON & SON DOUBLE PERCUSSION FOWLERS WITH ORIGINAL MAHOGANY TWO TIERED CASE. SN 12280, 12281. Cal. 12ga. Bores measure .725. 30″ Fine Damascus bbls are marked “John Manton & Son Dover Street London” on wide concave elevated rib. Bottoms of bbls marked w/ SN “12280” and “12281” w/ British provisional and definitive proofs for 14 bore. Case hardened breech plugs have non-vented platinum blow outs. The locks are engraved w/ large open scrolls w/ left lock showing a pair of pheasants, and the right lock showing a pair of partridges. The high serpentine hammers are scroll engraved w/ stylized dolphin heads. Trigger guards are engraved w/ dog on bow, pheasants and SN on the grip. The nicely figured walnut stocks measure 14-1/8″ over long tang steel butt plates engraved w/ dog chasing a pheasant on the tangs. Trigger plate and thimble terminate in a stylized pineapple and are quite ornate. Buttstocks and forends are checkered w/ fairly coarse checkering w/ mullered borders. Ebony ramrods have brass tips w/ worms under brass covers. Drop at heel: 1-7/8″, drop at comb:1-5/8″. Weight: 7 lbs 1oz. Guns are housed in their original two tiered dove-tailed mahogany case w/ brass corners and inset brass reinforcement, and brass D ring central handle. Interior is lined in green baize cloth, w/ John Manton & Son paper label. Accessories include an old glass oil bottle w/ remnants of a cork stopper and the green label: “Prepared oil for gun locks Manton & Son, 6 Dover Street.” There are also: 5-1/4″ body leather covered German silver flask by Sykes, graduated from 2-1/4-3 grams of powder; unmarked shot pouch w/ German silver spout and heart shaped reinforcements at the bottom end; Small leather wallet containing 2 sets of spare nipples, 2 lock pins, and 2 other small screws; ebony handled 2 pronged tool, perhaps a modified nipple wrench; triangular leather wallet that appears to have once contained a nipple wrench; 2-pc ebony cleaning rod; wool mop; jag; and a wad devil. PROVENANCE: Letter from Holland and Holland stating that they were made between 1840-1845. Venezuelan registration papers. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Gun 12280: Bbls appear to have most of their orig brown under years of dirt, oil and grime. Breech plugs show much of their case color. Bores appear to be good, but need cleaning. Some slight pitting is evident at the muzzle. Locks and hammers show lots of case color under lots of hardened oil and grime. Stocks show much of their varnish finish w/ areas of darkening at the grip, comb, and forend. Trigger guard is mostly brown at the bow w/ some blue remaining at the grip. Pineapple has traces of color, thimble mostly silver. Butt plate has heavy oil and grime rust patina. Gun 12281: Seems to have brighter Damascus pattern, more case color on breeches. Fairly sharp small dent about 6-1/4″ from muzzle on right barrel. Bores are good. Lock plates, breeches, and hammers show 70-80% case color. Traces of blue on trigger guard bows. More blue and clearer engraving on grip. Wood is in about same condition as its mate. There’s an old crack under the thimble. BOTH ramrods are in good condition w/ their full length. The case is in good condition w/ 3 long cracks across the lid, right rear brass corner is beginning to detach, with the right rear dove-tail breaking out. Case appears to have its original finish w/ lots of lacquer remaining on the brass. The dove-tailed lift out tray is solid. Partitions intact (one slightly loose). Lower partitions are in good solid condition. Cloth is remarkably good. Label has some places that are rubbed by the hammer screws of the guns. There are some stains and cracks corresponding to the cracks in the lid. Accessories are good, but well used. This is a great pair of guns that could be greatly enhanced by some judicious cleaning and easy case repair. 4-33433 MGM35 (12,000-17,000)
