JOHN MANTON SINGLE FOWLER CA.1818 CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION WITH CASE. SN NSN. Cal. Approx. 24 Bore. 38″ Very fancy Damascus barrel, probably of Moorish origin, has inlaid silver and gold wire, and raised decorations. Breech plug has two platinum bands, and has been converted to percussion with simple drum and nipple. Drum is stamped “T. J. Egan” (who probably did the conversion). Lockplate is engraved with armorial device at rear, feather borders, and “Jno. Manton & Son” in copperplate script, and “Patent”. Flat faced percussion hammer has some scroll engraving. Trigger plate terminates in stylized pineapple with feather engraving at base. Trigger guard has loop-type grip, and is engraved with stand of arms on bow. Nicely marbled European walnut stock has steel buttplate with long tang, and stand of arms engraving. Stock has shadow line cheekpiece for right hand shooter, drop points, and flat top square checkering with mullered borders. Truncated rectangular crest plate is on top of grip and is engraved with “G F B”. Stock attaches to bbl with two side nails through silver oval escutcheons. Ramrod is missing. What appears to be original case, as it fits this gun perfectly, is made of very nicely figured mahogany with double hook closures, and brass D-ring handle with central medallion engraved “G. Snyder” (which does not match initials on gun). Case is lined in dark green baize with John Manton & Son label (used between 1815-1820). Accessories include glass, leather and pewter travel flask, pewter oil bottle, and unmarked brass powder flask with shell motif. CONDITION: Fair to good, showing considerable wear. Bbl shows traces of pattern, considerable wear, and much of gold and silver inlay is missing. Iron parts are silver and gray. Stock shows an old re-finish, with much wear. Case is very fine, with some of the bow-tie dovetails in lid broken, so lid needs attention. Partitions are good, as is cloth. Label is fine, slightly foxed, with some soiling. Accessories are good. 4-40620 MGM78 (3,000-5,000)
