RARE AND UNUSUAL J. BENTLEY PATENT INLINE SINGLE BARREL PERCUSSION FOWLER. SN 22. Cal. 11 Bore. It seems that there truly is nothing new under the sun. This innovative gun has all of the attributes, and maybe a few more, of our modern inline muzzle loaders. Patent no. 10280 was awarded in 1844 “for nipples mounted parallel with the bore of guns”. This very well constructed fowler has 35″ Damascus barrel which starts octagonal at breech, is faceted to 16 sides, and has wedding band transition to round portion, which is slightly swamped, as it tapers to muzzle. There is an inlaid narrow gold, and wider platinum band, at breech end. Top flat is engraved “Manufactured for W. Chance Son & Co. London”. Silver bead is mounted in inlaid silver pointer at muzzle. Bottom of bbl is stamped with Birmingham proofs and SN. Unique breech plug has square shouldered nipple, set directly inline with bore. There is a hinged cover to exclude weather and any chance of flying bits of cap during firing. which hinges to the right to give access to nipple. Cover is held in place by spring-loaded detent. Top of cover is engraved “J. Bentley” “Patentee” “& Maker”. Cover and upper portions of plug are engraved with large open scroll. There is another platinum band at rear. SN is stamped on bottom of plug. Internal firing mechanism of this piece is cocked by large rear facing “trigger” at front portion of large trigger guard. This cocks long nosed hinged “hammer” which protrudes through mounting hook on breech iron and hole in web of cover to strike nipple. Cover can be operated at half cock. Breech iron has very long tang which extends almost to comb, and is scroll engraved. Operating mechanism is mounted on long trigger plate which has pineapple finial. Tang extends half-way to toe. Tang is scroll engraved with SN in shaped rectangle. Flat fronted scroll engraved trigger guard attaches to plate. Broadly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over steel buttplate with scroll engraved long top tang. There is a cap box mounted on toe line with engraved and pineapple decorated German silver body, with steel trap door. Flat top point pattern checkering is at about 20 LPI with mullered borders. Bbl attaches to stock with two side nails through long rectangular German silver escutcheons. Tail pipe is steel, and stock transitions to under-rib of bbl with German silver cap. Mahogany ramrod with brass ends and worm under cap on tail, mounts through two plain twist pipes. Bore diameter: -.762, Wall thickness: -.044. Drop at heel: 1-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-7/8″. Weight: 7 lbs. 2 oz, LOP 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Good. Bbl retains traces of original brown with Damascus pattern visible. Action is gray brown. Stocks retain most of an old re-finish, with numerous nicks, marks, and compressions. Mechanics are fine. Bore is fine, shiny with some slight frosting toward muzzle. 4-40623 MGM93 (3,000-5,000)
