J. FARSON 8 BORE PERCUSSION WATERFOWLER. SN NSN. Cal. 8 Bore (.825 Bore diameter). 36″ Nicely browned, heavy, laminated steel barrels are engraved “J. Farson. London. Laminated Steel” on elevated concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with Birmingham proofs, “Roses Patent no. 20”, “9”, and “J.A” (barrel makers initials?) on right bbl. Case hardened hook breech plugs are fitted with square shouldered nipples. “JA” is stamped on hooks. Breech iron has flared fences, and some scroll engraving. Front action locks have flat-sided serpentine hammers. Lockplates and hammers are engraved with about 40% coverage of English scroll. “J. Farson” is on the front of each lockplate. Trigger plate has vase-shaped finial with round tip. Blued trigger guard is scroll engraved. Dense European walnut straight grip stock measures 13-9/16″ over blued steel buttplate. 20 LPI point pattern checkering has mullered border. There is a large vacant silver oval on toe line. Forestock mounts to bbl with side nail through steel oval escutcheons with circular tips. Ebony ramrod has brass tulip head, and brass tail with steel worm under cap. Ramrod is held by two plain pipes, and tail pipe which matches trigger plate. Bore diameter: left -.827, right -.826. Wall thickness: left -.041, right -.055. Drop at heel: 3-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-7/8″. Weight: 12 lbs. 2.5 oz, LOP 13-9/16″. CONDITION: Excellent, close to new. Bbls retain nearly all their original brown, with vibrant pattern, only slightly silvered at muzzles and bolsters. Breeches, breech iron, locks, and hammers retain nearly all of their original case color, with only the rear of the top tang turning silver-brown. Blue on trigger guard is mostly flaked, with only traces showing. Inside of bow is quite bright. Buttplate retains approximately 75% of its original blue, silvered on heel and toe where butt was in contact with ground during loading and storage. Wood in its original finish shows only a few marks. Bores are excellent, bright, shiny, and smooth. Locks are crisp. An exceptionally clean big bore from the 1850’s or 1860’s. 4-40857 MGM119 (7,500-12,500)
