RARE PHILIP WILSON PHILADELPHIA LARGE BORE WATER FOWLER.

RARE PHILIP WILSON PHILADELPHIA LARGE BORE WATER FOWLER. SN 273. Cal. Approx. .920 Bore diameter. (6 Bore). This very fine quality gun was assembled and finished in America using what appears to be imported parts, as was done by many makers at the time. This firm was only in business for 2-3 years just prior to the Civil War. 37″ Twist barrels are engraved “Philip Wilson & Co. Philadelphia. Laminated Steel.” on wide concave rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with Belgian proofs, SN, and initials “JED”. Splinter is stamped CITY. “699” is stamped on bottom rib in front of loop. Oak ramrod with brass tulip head and tail is held by two plain pipes. Breech plugs have SN on hooks. Breech iron has some simple scroll engraving. Front action locks have well filed flat-faced serpentine hammers which transition to round, and terminate in stylized dolphin heads. Lockplates are inlet with wood remaining between top of plates and bottoms of bbls, in Westley Richards fashion. Locks and hammers have open scroll engraving, and front portion of lockplates is marked “Philip Wilson”. Trigger plate terminates in nicely shaped pineapple. Trigger guard has some scroll on bow, and SN on tang. Crotch-figured, red-toned American walnut stock measures 14-3/16″ over steel buttplate with engraved long top tang. Unusually shaped rounded bolsters surround lockplates with long drop points. 18 LPI checkering has mullered borders, and a silver shield is inlet at top of grip. Side nail slides through line engraved oval steel escutcheons. Bore diameter: left -.920, right -.915. Wall thickness: left -.065, right -.056. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 12 lbs. 15 oz, LOP 14-3/16″. CONDITION: Good. Bbls have been cleaned, and have toned back to silver brown with most of pattern visible. All other steel parts have also been cleaned, showing some light pitting, and are gray brown. Wood retains most of its original finish with a few spots thinning, but is quite pleasing, though a bit dry. There are a number of minor rubs and marks. A small crack is starting at rear of breech iron tang. Locks are crisp. Bores are shiny, but frosted throughout. A very unusual American big bore. 4-40782 MGM86 (2,500-3,500)
