EDWARD WILLIAM COOKE (British, 1811-1880) THE ISLAND CASTLE. Oil on canvas Mediterranean scene shows a large castle in the center of a busy waterway with ships and land beyond. Foreground has several men bringing parts of a ship aground with crashing waves, fishing boats and large ships dotting the green ocean. All under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right “E W Cooke”. Housed in a period gesso decorated fancy frame (with damage). NOTE: Accompanying the lot is a book “E.W. Cooke A Man of His Time by John Munday”. SIZE: 18-1/2″ x 33″.
