*CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD RIFLE BUILT FOR COL. TOWNSEND WHELEN BY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, GRIFFIN AND HOWE, AND STOCKED BY ALVIN LINDEN. SN 1932. Cal. 30-06. 24″ Round Star gauge bbl. with banded sling loop bedded into stock has banded-on ramp front sight base with Marbles bead. Unnumbered action is matted on receiver ring and bridge. Left rail is fitted with extremely long 4-3/8″ specially made Griffin and Howe scope base. Bolt is bent for low scope use, and knob is checkered with four separate panels. Case hardened cocking piece is fitted with rear sight, adjustable for windage and elevation, custom made by Griffin and Howe. Standard bottom metal has had push button safety installed, and front tang engraved “1932”. This work was also done by Griffin and Howe. Dense, dark American walnut stock measures 14″ over checkered and engraved steel trap buttplate. Trap contains a jointed cleaning rod, oiler, and screw driver. Stock features sling loop, engraved steel trap grip cap with horn spacer, horn forend tip, and very finely executed scalloped pattern wrap around borderless checkering. All stock work was meticulously executed by Alvin Linden, generally acknowledged to be the finest custom stock maker of his time. Drop at heel: 2-3/16″, drop at comb: 1-7/16″. Weight: 10 lbs. 5 oz, LOP 14″. Weaver K 2.5 X Scope with fine crosshairs, is in very long double lever Griffin and Howe side mount. The entire history of the building, and the shooting, of this fine rifle is outlined in MISTER RIFLEMAN by Col. Townsend Whelen and Bradford Angier in the section entitled “A Rifleman’s Battery”. A copy of the book is included with the rifle. Also included is April 1938 “American Rifleman” with Col. Whelen on the cover, shooting this rifle. Another book, WHY NOT LOAD YOUR OWN by Col. Townsend Whelen is inscribed and signed by the author. Also included is a photograph of Col. Whelen lighting his pipe. PROVENANCE: Two books, a magazine, and a photograph. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal retains most of an old re-black, over pinprick pitting, which is also evident on scope mount and cocking piece sight. Stock retains virtually all of what appears to be, its original hand rubbed oil finish with a few nicks, scrapes, and dents from handling and use. Checkering shows only the slightest wear. Small piece of horn is missing from top left hand side of forend tip. Scope has some marks from being in a variety of mounts, with blue thinning. Optics are clear. Bore is excellent, bright, and shiny with sharp rifling, and just a hint of erosion at throat. Books and magazine are fine, as is photograph. A one of a kind American classic. 4-39329 MGM58 (15,000-20,000)
