VERY FINE CHARLES LANCASTER PERCUSSION DOUBLE GAME GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 1204. (ca. 1840 ) Cal. 14 Bore. 30″ Twist barrels are engraved “Charles Lancaster 151 New Bond St. London.” on broad raised concave rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with London proofs, SN, and “CL” (Charles Lancaster, Barrel Maker). Bbls are fitted with two plain ramrod pipes. Rosewood ramrod has brass tip and tail, with steel worm under cap. Breech plugs have SN stamped on hooks, slit-vented platinum “blow-outs”, short platinum lines at rear, and nicely engraved shell with scroll finial on rib extension. Original nipples appear to be present. Nipples are stamped with a small “r” and “l” (right/ left). Breech iron has widely flared fences, engraved with shaded open scroll, and standing pheasant. Front action locks have broad flat-sided serpentine hammers, that are engraved with large open scroll. Hammers have stylized dolphin’s heads. Lockplates have vignettes of game … hare on left, and trio of pheasants on right. “C. Lancaster. London” is engraved in ribands on each lockplate. Blued trigger plate has pineapple finial. Trigger guard is engraved with pointer on bow, trio of pheasants on tang, which also has one pheasant peering around a boulder, engraved with SN. Very nicely marbled and figured European walnut straight grip stock measures 14-5/16″ over steel buttplate, engraved with dog chasing pheasant, and scroll on long top tang. Flat top point pattern checkering is at 20 LPI with mullered borders. Vacant silver rectangle with cut corners is at top of grip. Side nail slides through oval silver escutcheons, and tail pipe is engraved with large scroll with stylized pineapple finial. Bore diameter: left -.692, right -.691. Wall thickness: left -.039, right -.036. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-7/16″. Weight: 7 lbs. 4 oz, LOP 14-15/16″. Original makers walnut case has inlet brass hook closures, scalloped brass corners, and brass D-ring handle. Case is lined in tan patterned leather with large paper Lancaster label. There are three compartments that have covers with brass knobs. Partitions have wooden tops. Case contains quite an array of tools, accessories, and wads, including ebony-handled nipple wrench with pricker, turnscrew, pair of nipple cleaning implements, steel T-handled nipple wrench with brass caps (spare nipples under caps),two wad punches, pewter top crystal oil bottle, two cap dispensers, and nipple prick. Also in case is a very fine quality shot flask marked “E. Steglass England”, and a copper bodied powder flask with intricate measuring and dispensing top, marked “M. Marsh Sheffield”. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain 90-95% original brown, thinning slightly. Pattern is excellent. Most of case hardening color is evident on breech plugs and iron. Left lockplate retains 70-80% case color; right lockplate 40-50%. Trigger guard retains most of its original charcoal blue, silvering at edges and grip. Buttplate retains a considerable amount of its blue, thinned at butt. Stock retains most of its original finish worn through in a few areas, mostly around grip, and fore piece, with numerous marks and nicks from handling and use over the years. Locks are crisp. Bores are very fine with some slight frosting. Case is very fine with some oil added to exterior over the years. Key escutcheon is missing. Interior leather is fine with soiling and staining from contact with gun, and lubricants. Partitions are tight. Label is fine, foxed, with one area rubbed from contact with fence. Accessories are fine. Modern ones show use and tarnishing. A classic best gun by a highly regarded maker, needing no apologies. 4-40621 MGM96 (8,000-12,000)
