BROWN LEATHER FRENCH-MADE FLYING HELMET AND TWO PAIR OF FLYING GOGGLES. The helmet, made of flannel-lined soft brown leather, has two earflaps secured by snaps marked “DVB Made in France.” The helmet’s six-panel skull has a soft visor. The chinstrap is elasticized cotton, but frayed from use. One pair of goggles is of the British pattern, but carries no apparent identifying marks. The lenses show some delaminating and there is a tear in the fabric near the strap attachment. The second set of goggles, an example of British World War I flying goggles, is marked “Goggle Mask Flying Mark I, __ ex Goggle Mask A.” Both the lenses and the metal frames are intact, while the leather surround is dry and badly flaking, and the imitation fur is dirty. CONDITION: Leather flying helmet is in very good supple condition and not heavily worn. Goggles 1: Overall condition is worn, tarnished and dirty from storage. Goggles 2: Poor. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53558-1 CW45 (400-500)
