*VERY FINE KORNBRATH ENGRAVED R. G. OWEN CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD RIFLE. SN nsn. Cal. 30-06. 24″ Streamlined round bbl is engraved “R. G. Owen, Sauquoit. N. Y.” on top. Springfield action has had tang re-shaped to a more graceful line. Receiver ring is engraved with Kornbrath signature poppies in stippled background, with close set poppies as borders. Lyman 48 receiver sight has been mounted. Copper bead blade front sight is screwed into slot milled through matted base with matted ramp engraved with more poppies to match receiver ring. Bolt handle has a few more poppies in scroll. Knob has been nicely knurled and checkered with a band, and two round panels. Bottom metal has hinged floorplate, secured by checkered sliding button release at rear. Case hardened bottom metal is beautifully engraved with central medallion of floorplate depicting a gold relief bugling elk in detailed woodland background. This is surrounded by areas of very finely executed shaded scroll. The borders of this scroll have groups of poppies in relief. There is another relief cluster of poppies on trigger guard bow. Action screws are also relief engraved, repeating this theme. This is undoubtedly the work of Rudolph Kornbrath. Finely streaked and marbled European walnut pistol grip stock measures 13-5/8″ over checkered and border engraved steel trap buttplate. Stock features beaded shadow line right hand cheekpiece, horn forend tip, 24 LPI borderless multi-point pattern checkering (wrap around forend checkering has large uncheckered diamond band in pattern). This stock also features Owen signature arrowhead drop points, and case hardened trap grip cap with more relief engraving with the poppy theme. Behind grip cap there is an “O” with a broad arrow in an oval (Owen logo ?) with the no. “815”. Drop at heel: Approx 2-5/8″, drop at comb: Approx 1-3/4″. Weight: 7 lbs. 8 oz, LOP 13-5/8″. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel, action, and bolt retain most of what is probably their original rust blue, silvered on high edges and muzzle. Bottom metal retains some of its color case hardening in protected areas, but is mostly a pleasing silver gray. Grip cap and buttplate retain most of their case color, silvered at edges. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original rubbed oil finish, possibly with some added oil rubbed in. Checkering is slightly worn, and does not appear to have been re-cut. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny, with sharp rifling throughout. A very fine rifle, combining the work of two true masters. 4-39168 MGM67 (15,000-25,000)
