CHARLES LANCASTER PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 2876. (ca. 1857) Cal. .550 Groove diameter, with 7-groove Enfield type rifling, approximately one turn in 60 inches. 31″ Damascus barrels have raised flat full length matted rib. Rear express sight has three folding leaves with gold lines, which are marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Small bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into front portion of rib. It is interesting to note that the rear sight is formed by V-notch filed in top of breech iron. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with proofs, SN, and “CL” (Charles Lancaster, barrel maker). Bottom of right bbl in front of loop is engraved “Charles Lancaster. 151. New Bond St. London.” Bottom of left bbl is engraved “Patent Smooth Bored Rifle”. This information is partially hidden by forepiece of stock when bbls were assembled to gun. Mahogany ramrod has brass tip and brass capped steel worm tail and is held in place by two plain steel thimbles, the second of which has a sling eye. Tip of ramrod is grooved and snaps over boss at end of bbl to retain ramrod; nicely filed breech plugs have vented platinum “blow-outs”. There is scroll engraving on rib extension. Breech iron has scroll engraving. Front action locks have wide flat hammers with front sliding safety bolts that engage at half cock. Lockplates and hammers have about 70% coverage of well cut open flowing scroll. “C. Lancaster. London” is in riband on front portion of each lockplate. Hammers have stylized dolphin heads. Trigger plate and thimble terminate in stylized pineapples. Trigger guard has checkered steel extension forming a pistol grip at tang. Bow is engraved with a pair of battling stags. SN is at grip. Tail of tang is scroll engraved. Nicely streaked, dense European walnut stock measures 14-3/8″ over checkered steel buttplate, with scroll engraved long tang. Stock features drop points, right hand shadow line cheekpiece, and 20 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is an engraved steel sling button on toe line. Bbl is fastened by side nail through engraved oval steel escutcheons. Wall thickness: left -.090 at muzzle, right -.082 at muzzle. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 7 lbs. 11.5 oz, LOP 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Fine, as correctly maintained and re-finished over the years. Bbls retain 85% of an old brown. Damascus pattern is not strong. Breeches, lockplates, and hammers retain most of an old re-case color, with engraving slightly washed. Trigger guard and buttplate have a considerable amount of their charcoal re-blue, but engraving is considerably washed. Stock retains most of an old varnish finish, with a few marks, mostly on the right side of butt. Sharp edges and details are slightly rounded. There is a repaired chip using original wood, on right side of butt near buttplate at toe. Checkering is correctly re-cut. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny. Locks and safeties are crisp. A very fine, best quality, rifle, it would make a fine hunting companion today. 4-40630 MGM69 (5,000-7,000)
