*EXTREMELY RARE SMITH & WESSON MODEL 1917 DA REVOLVER.

*EXTREMELY RARE SMITH & WESSON MODEL 1917 DA REVOLVER. Cal. 45ACP mag. SN 75263. Very unusual 1917 with standard 5-1/2” bbl, blue finish, smooth walnut grips and a Lanyard loop in the butt. It has standard markings on the bbl, frame, and butt with the unusual addition of a McGivern bead Partridge front sight and standard, pre-war, Smith & Wesson adjustable rear sight which is numbered to this revolver on the underneath side. The grips are stamped on the inside with a large “US” and the left side of the grip frame, under the grips, has the factory refinish mark of a stamped diamond. Accompanied by a Smith & Wesson letter dated Dec 11, 1998 over the signature of Roy Jinks identifying this revolver as having been shipped July 5, 1918 to the US Government Springfield Armory as a standard revolver. It further states that this revolver was returned to Smith & Wesson somewhere in the mid 1920’s at which time the factory installed the adjustable rear sight and a target front sight. The frame and bbl were milled to accommodate these sights, after which it was refinished and new smooth stocks were installed and stamped “US”. Mr. Jinks states, at that time, that this conversion is exceptionally rare and to that date he had only ever seen 3 such conversions during the 40 years he had been researching Smith & Wesson revolvers. Page 217 of the book “SMITH & WESSON 1857-1945 REVISED EDITION” by Jinks & Neal refers to this model and states “It is reported that a few of this model were fitted with target sights for the US Army”. CONDITION: Very fine. Retains 92-94% bright factory finish with light muzzle and edge wear, a moderate cylinder line with light handling and use marks. Grips are crisp.
