E & G HIGHAM 4 BORE HAMMER SINGLE BARREL BALL AND SHOT GUN. SN 2977. Cal. 4 Bore..910 Bore diameter. 4″ Chamber. 18″ Round smooth bore bbl with Nock form is engraved “E & G Higham” “9 Ranelagh Street” “Liverpool” on Nock form. Bolster on right side of bbl is engraved “Charge 9 drs. No. 6 Powder and Ball for Elephant, Rhinoceros, and Other Pachyderms”. Bolster on left side of bbl is engraved “Charge 7 drs No. 6 Powder and 4 oz. Shot for Lion, Leopard, and Personal Defence”. Single standing express rear sight with gold line is dovetailed through oval shaped soldered-on block base. Silver bead front sight with flip-up enameled night bead is longitudinally dovetailed into matching block at muzzle. Bottom of bbl is stamped with London black powder proofs for 6 bore. Bbl flats and removable extractor slide are stamped with SN. Massive case hardened action with Jones underlever has rounded bar. Peninsula back action rebounding right hand lock with large serpentine hammer is engraved “E & G Higham”. Action, lockplate, and hammer have about 30% coverage of nicely executed English scroll engraving. Trigger guard has some scroll engraving with SN on tang which extends to engraved steel grip cap. Dense, streaked and lightly fiddle figured European walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over Silvers type pad mounted to remnants of older buttplate or pad with large widow’s peak. There is a vacant silver oval and sling eye on toe line. Multi-point pattern flattop checkering is at approx 18 LPI. Full forend has horn tip with matching checkering, and fastens to bbl with side nail through engraved steel escutcheons. Drop at heel: Approx 2-1/2″, drop at comb: Approx 2″. Weight: 12 lbs. 0 oz, LOP 14-5/8″. Included with gun are four machined brass cases with very thick sidewalls, marked no. 4 and stamped with various gun makers names, including Tolley, Greener, and Charles Daly. CONDITION: Excellent, as professionally refurbished. Bbl retains nearly all of good quality re-black. Action retains all of a correctly colored re-case hardening. Engraving has been picked up. Stocks retain virtually all of a hand rubbed oil finish. Wood is very slightly under metal. Checkering has been re-cut. Action is tight. Bbl is on face, touching breech face at bottom, with a glimmer of light visible at top. Bore is good, with some striations and pitting. This really neat gun handles and balances surprisingly well, and should be lots of fun to shoot. 4-39196 MGM50 (13,000-18,000)
