RARE & UNUSUAL GERMAN UNDER LEVER OVER/UNDER SHOTGUN. Cal. 16 ga. NSN. Appears to be made by Collath or possibly Iman Meffert as both makers utilize some of the features found on this shotgun. It has unusually long, 31-3/8”, superposed bbls with solid, flat, matted rib, sgl bead, extractor & dbl triggers. Chambers are 2-9/16”. Mounted with very nicely figured, streaky, French walnut with full checkered, tiny rnd forearm and spectacularly carved & checkered buttstock with a deep cheekpiece, 13-3/4” over a serrated horn buttplate. It has deep relief carving on both sides of wrist at receiver with matted background. Grip cap is an exquisitely detailed lion’s head. Bbl has sling loop with a corresponding swivel in buttstock. Receiver has full coverage, extremely fine, detailed Germanic engraving with vignettes of a fox carrying a duck on left side and an auerhaun on a limb on right side. Top of receiver has three partridges just above the safety. All completely surrounded by intertwined, floral, foliate & vine patterns. Lever is most unusual as it is filed & decorated in exquisite detail depicting a dolphin or sea serpent with gold eyes. Top of receiver has the unusual winged safety that when turned to the “on” position is parallel with the axis of the bbls and perpendicular to the axis when it is in the “fire” position. Top of bbl is marked on right side “ANDR. AUG. AHL,” and on left side “BONN A / RH.” along with the word, “PRIMA” on both sides in a circle detailing the type of steel. Bore diameter: top – .670, bottom – .662. Bore restrictions: top – .008, bottom – .027. Unable to gauge wall thickness. Drop at heel: 1-3/4”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight: 7 lbs. .64 oz. Receiver, lever & triggerguard retain 40-50% thin case colors, strong & bright in the most sheltered areas, turning silver elsewhere. Forearm has small cracks by three of the mounting screws, otherwise wood is sound showing light wear with minor storage & handling nicks & scratches.
