*RARE CASED FIRST PURDEY OVER/UNDER SHOTGUN MADE. Cal. 12 ga. SN 22564. This is the first Purdey over/under built on the design of Edwinson Green of Cheltenham, England, patented in 1912. It was built in 1923 by Harry Lawrence, as is detailed on p. 130 of Purdey / Gun & Rifle Makers / The Definitive History, Dallas. Mr. Dallas states, “This was an experimental gun and no details exist of it in the Dimension books, although later it was sold to C.B. Vaughan”. This book, on p. 200, states that 27 over/under guns (pre-war Green design) were built, indeed making this an extremely rare shotgun. This shotgun is described as having 29-1/8” superposed bbls choked FULL/IMP-CYL with smooth, flat, solid rib, sgl brass bead with the maker’s name & address engraved over forearm area and also “MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTHS FLUID PRESSED STEEL”. Mounted with nicely figured, straight grain, English walnut with 3-pc checkered forearm and straight hand stock with raised teardrop side panels, 14-1/2” over a solid red pad. Receiver & lockplates are engraved in typical English patterns of bouquets of flowers surrounded by extremely fine, foliate arabesque patterns with about 75% coverage. Lockplates have cocked indicators with maker’s name on each side and the maker’s name & address on bottom. Top tang has “SAFE” in gold and all appended metal is engraved to match. Receiver has raised rib fences with a modified Greener crossbolt making this one of the most sturdy over/under shotguns ever produced. Accompanied by an orig Purdey red felt lined, oak & leather trunk case with maker’s label in lid and a hinged divider covering the bottom section which is partitioned for shotgun & various other items & implements which are misisng. A covered compartment at one end contains several spare springs & cleaning tools. Bore diameter: top – .731, bottom – .732. Bore restrictions: top – .008, bottom – .040. Wall thickness: top – .023, bottom – .028. Drop at heel: 2-1/4”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight: 7 lbs. 8.96 oz. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbls retain a fine, smooth, re-blacked finish in English style. Receiver & lockplates have been cleaned bright while the thumb lever & trigger guard retain all of a fine restored blue. Stock has a hairline back of right lockplate, otherwise wood is sound & retains most of a professionally restored finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. Case shows moderate wear with some crackling on left end of lid. Interior is clean & bright. 4-31152 JR547 (20,000-35,000)
