J. PURDEY AND SONS TOP LEVER BAR IN WOOD HAMMER GUN. SN 11195. Cal. 12ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. Rebounding locks. 30″ Dovetailed steel bbls are engraved “2” and “J. Purdey & Sons. 314 1/2. Oxford Street, London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid- Pressed Steel.” on narrow concave game rib. Triangles of scroll engraving at breech ends. Bbls flats are stamped w/ London proofs and “12B” “12M” and “Not for Ball”. Bottoms of bbls have SN “11195” (1882). Bar in wood top lever action has beautifully filed fences, Purdey hidden third fastener, and is finely engraved w/ tight scroll and rose bouquet (Probably executed by Purdey head engraver, J. Lucas). Lock plates are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons”. Top lever is engraved “Patent”. Relatively plain European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over 5/8″ thick ribbed hard rubber butt plate, featuring vacant silver oval, and 28 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.735, right -.745. Bore restrictions: left -.012, right -.010. Wall thickness: left -.023, right -.014. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 6 lbs 11oz. CONDITION: Fair to good. No original finish. Gun is gray and brown w/ no deep pitting. Checkering is almost worn smooth on buttstock, and is nearly invisible on forend. Wood is sound. There is a 1-1/2″ x 3/16″ repair to left front of forend. Bores have heavy pitting in left bbl, and some pitting in right, w/ long striations down the bore. Action is tight, and on face, but down on the flats w/ evidence of rear lump being “tapped up.” Locks are crisp. Screw slots are quite good, except right lock screw which is buggered.
