ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Consignor indicated that this gun was made by Victor Funk as represented in our catalogue. A collector recently contacted us and stated that the maker was actually Valentin Funk. We have no way of confirming either.

ORNATE GERMAN SILVER MOUNTED VICTOR FUNK PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 1272. (Ca. 1850) Groove diameter .630. 32″ Twist bbls are rifled with two different styles of rifling. Right bbl is octagonal, left is 15 groove. Tops of bbls have four areas inlaid with gold and silver flowing scroll with silver swan heads and gold daisies. Wide flat full length rib is inlaid in gold “V. Funk & Sohne in Suhl”. Bbls are fitted with three ramrod pipes, front two are of German silver with 1-7/8″ wide sling loop mounted on middle pipe. Rear pipe is Damascus and includes loop. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, and “V. Funk & S”, as are breech plugs. Breech iron has acanthus scroll engraving. Very nicely made locks have frizzen springs, as a flintlock would have, but instead of a frizzen there are steel nipple guards which have to be retracted before rifle can be fired. Intricately filed hammers have detailed dolphin heads with eyes, ears, and tongues inlaid in gold. Body of hammers have scroll and acanthus engraving. Lockplates have a mixture of gold inlaid letters and game scene, and regular engraving. Right lockplate has “V. Funk & Sohne” inlaid in gold. Tail of plate has gold inlaid recumbent stag in engraved woodland background. Left lockplate has “In Suhl” inlaid in gold along with a wild boar in pastoral background. Borders of locks and nipple guards are engraved in herringbone pattern. Lock internals are bright polished. Right lock has a fly in tumbler for use with set trigger. Stock furniture is a very high grade of German silver. Trigger guard has intricately filed and engraved “pineapple” depicting a cherub over oval cobweb with acanthus scroll. Trigger guard bow depicts a stag leaping over a fallen log in woodlands. Tail of guard extends into looped pistol grip. Trigger plate is stamped with SN, and front trigger is set. Tan slightly figured European walnut stock measures 14″ over German silver buttplate. Top tang of plate repeats the cherub treatment of trigger guard. Right side of buttstock has sliding patchbox carved with bearded figure with large nose and heavy eyebrows that has ivory teeth and protruding tongue which actuates the catch. Stock shows a large amount of detailed carving. There is a full relief recumbent stag in woodlands behind cheekpiece. Outline of checkering has relief acanthus and scroll. Checkering is at about 20 LPI. Forend checkering extends into large wolf’s head with inset mother of pearl and ebony eyes. Horn mouth is ramrod thimble. Bbl attaches to forend with side nail through shaped German silver escutcheons. German silver crest plate is at top of grip engraved with initials “GS”. Hickory ramrod has horn tip and German silver end. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/8″. Weight: 7 lbs. 10 oz, LOP 14″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain nearly all of an old re-brown w/ some small pits that did not polish out. Areas of inlay are missing. Rear sight is missing. Locks are mostly gray brown with some case color visible in protected areas. Stocks show most of an old refinish. Carving is somewhat worn. Checkering has been re-cut with a number of over-cut diamonds. German silver furniture is fine, and polished bright. Bores are good, shiny, with some light pitting throughout. Locks are crisp. Left hammer is loose on tumbler. A truly unique and example that showcases fine German craftsmanship. 4-39535 (4,500-7,500)
