JAN WEENIX THE YOUNGER (Dutch, 1640-1719) HUNTER WITH DOG AND HIS GAME. Extremely large oil on canvas scene shows a young man bearing a musket and wearing a red coat over his brown suit. A large brimmed black hat sits atop his blond hair and looks proudly over his recently shot collection of game. A variety of birds are piled on a rock wall under blue and pink cloud sky. His dog stands beside him. Signed lightly lower left “J. Weenix”. There is a round Switzerland customs stamp on reverse of stretcher which partially reads “Luzern P-V Schwe_ _ _ ollamt”. Housed in a magnificent antique gesso decorated gilt frame. NOTE: This work was viewed in 2010 by Anke Van Wagenberg, Ph.D. who is in the midst of compiling and writing the catalog raisonne and upon inspection of this painting feels this is Jan Weenix’s work, the signature being consistent, the composition and subject matter indicating that this was probably done in the 1670’s. SIZE: 47″ x 67-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Prominent New Jersey home. CONDITION: Good, relined with layers of restoration, with a couple of small patches to reserve of the canvas. 9-98281 (35,000-50,000)
