J. PURDEY THUMB HOLE ISLAND LOCK HAMMER GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 8142. Cal. 12ga. Double triggers. Non-rebounding locks. 30″ Dove-tailed Damascus bbls engraved “J. Purdey. 314 1/2 Oxford, St. London.” on the narrow concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls have SN “8142” (1869) and flats have London proof marks for 2-1/2″ chambers w/ reproof (1980) at .740 and .740. Bbls have early yoke style extractor system. Action has well executed small shaded scroll (probably by Purdey house engraver J. Lucas), beautifully filed fences and is engraved “Purdey’s Patent” on bottom, and “Patent” on the top. Back action Island locks are engraved w/ scroll and “Purdey”. Rounded serpentine hammers are scroll engraved, and terminate in stylized dolphin heads. Trigger guard is engraved in scroll and SN “8142”. Nicely figured and streaked Circassian walnut, straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over checkered wood butt and features silver oval w/ initials “W.S.W” w/ 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Splinter forend has a side nail fastener, and nicely shaped steel tip, w/ engraving, wood, and checkering to match buttstock. Bore diameter: left -.741, right -.740. Bore restrictions: left -000, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.027, right -.028. Drop at heel: 2-3/4″, drop at comb: 1-7/8″. Weight:6 lbs 12.5oz. Appears to be original leather case w/ stitched leather corners and initials “W.S.W.” embossed on lid. Interior is lined in red cloth w/ J. Purdey label. (Charge instructions hand-written in ink on the label) w/ 8142 marked in pencil. Accessories include 2-pc rosewood cleaning rod, horn handled powder and shot dippers marked G & J W. Hawksley, and a rosewood handled brass powder and shot dipper marked “Grammes Plomb 16” on one side, and “Grammes Ploudre T 1,40” on the other, also a leather wallet w/ James Dixon pull through cleaning brushes, J Purdey & Sons oil bottle, Curtis and Harvey no. 2 powder can w/ labels, a can of Army and Navy CSL gun and rifle cleaning fluid, and a can of Young’s 303. CONDITION: Fine as refurbished. Bbls retain 95% of quality re-brown, lettering is thin. Bores are bright and shiny, w/ couple of minor pits towards the breech in left bbl. Action is tight and on face, and is mostly silver w/ light scattered pitting. Locks are crisp. Lock plates have traces of orig case color in protected areas. Trigger guard has traces of re-blue. Screw slots are good, but show minor use. Wood retains virtually all of its restored oil finish w/ abrasions from handling. Checkering has been nicely re-cut. Case leather is dark, crazed, and stabilized, stitched corners, straps and handle are new. Interior partitions are tight, cloth is good. Paper label has one area rubbed through from contact w/ gun, and some light soiling. Accessories are good, except the Hawksley shot dipper has replaced handle. After using one of these thumb hole guns in the field one wonders why the design was ever changed! 4-35592 MGM48 (9,000-13,000)
