*JAMES PURDEY AND SONS ISLAND LOCK HAMMER EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 17628. Cal. 12ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. Dbl triggers. 30″ Chopper lump bbls are marked “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel.” on the concave game rib. Bbl flats show orig proof marks for 1-1/8 oz. and a recent (2001) London re-proof for 70mm chambers at 850 BAR. The right bbl is marked “Choke.” Both bbls have SN “17628” for 1901. Whitworth tube nos “27457” and “27458” marked on the loop. The rose and scroll engraved action is marked “Purdey’s Patent” on the bottom. The top lever is engraved “1.” The back action island locks are also rose and scroll engraved, and are marked “J. Purdey & Sons.” The elegantly shaped hammers are also rose and scroll engraved with stylized dolphin heads. The scroll engraved trigger guard is marked SN “17628.” The nicely figured European walnut buttstock measures 15″ over a checkered wood butt and has 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Bore diameter: left -.729, right -.729. Bore restrictions: left -.008, right -.000. Wall thickness: left -.031, right -.030. Drop at heel:2-5/8″ approx., drop at comb:1-5/8″ approx. Weight:6 lbs 11 oz. Older oak and leather case w/ brass corners is marked “B. Lambert Harris” on the top. Green cloth interior. Reproduction Purdey label. Accessories include pair of J. Purdey & Sons marked turn screws, oil bottle, unmarked striker case w/ spare strikers, and a small wood handled whisk broom. CONDITION: Very fine to near new, as refinished. Bbls retain 98%+ of what consignor states to be a Johnson re-black with engraving picked up. Bores are excellent. Small ding 10-1/4″ from muzzle on the right barrel which is not evident in the bore. The action shows 98%+ of a re-color case hardening w/ lettering picked up, scroll very slightly washed. Locks show 95%+ of their re-color hardening, w/ engraving slightly washed. Screw heads show some use. Trigger guard and top lever show 98% of their re-black. Buttstock and forend are very high quality restocks and show 99% of their finish. Gun is tight and on face, with just a glimmer of light at the top of the bbls. Ejectors are in time. Case has orig leather which shows some stains, but is in good condition. Interior partitions, cloth and accessories are new. Straps and handles are in good condition. Purdey hammer ejector shotguns are quite scarce.
