SISTER AGNES BERCHMANS (Canadian, 1879-1973) PHILOMENA. Large unframed oil on canvas allegorical scene shows a woman bracing herself holding an anchor on a rock against an oncoming storm with coastal castle beyond. This scene depicts the Princess who denied a suitor, stating she had given herself to Christ. Signed lower right “Sr A. Berchmans”. Sister Agnes Berchmans, born Julia Alma Landry, entered the Sisters of Charity while a teenager. Her order, recognizing her talents, sent her to Italy to study with Filadelfo Simi. SIZE: 53″ x 38″. PROVENANCE: From a large Boston, MA area Estate. CONDITION: Some consolidated alligator craquelure in rock areas and hair, otherwise very good. 9-99310 (1,000-1,500)
