FINE JAMES PURDEY AND SONS BAR IN WOOD TOP LEVER HAMMER GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 11641. Cal. 16ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. Rebounding locks. Front trigger “loose” (Articulated). 29″ Steel dovetailed bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street, London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid- Pressed Steel.” on the concave game rib w/ triangle of engraving at breech. Bbl flats have London black powder proofs w/ right being stamped “16” and left “16B”, “17M”, and “Not for Ball.” SN “11641” (1883) and initials “GP” (G. Prentice) are marked on bottoms of bbls. Dual under lug top lever action w/ nicely filed fences has well executed rose and scroll, probably by J. Lucas. Lock plates are engraved w/ matching scroll, and “J. Purdey & Sons.” Rose and scroll top lever is also engraved “Patent.” Rounded serpentine hammers are also rose and scroll engraved, and terminate in stylized dolphin heads. Large bow trigger guard has scroll and SN on grip. Lightly figured and streaked straight grip European walnut buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over checkered hard rubber butt plate, featuring a silver oval, w/ initials “ERC”, drop points, and 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Splinter Anson release forend has central inlaid silver diamond w/ no. “3.” Iron has SN and initial “T” (probably for Tysall, a Purdey actioner). Bore diameter: left -.668, right -.669. Bore restrictions: left -.016, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.025, right -.025. Drop at heel: 2″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 5 lbs 14.5oz. Leather CASE has brass corners, an area on top lid where initials have been removed and new piece of leather has been inset. Interior is lined in maroon cloth w/ reproduction Purdey label and contains a round pewter oil bottle. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain nearly all London quality re-black, engraving has been picked up, w/ a small area near left breech where pitting has not been completely struck out. Action retains 40-50% orig case color, thinning to mottled silver around hinge pin and fences. Lock plates retain 80-90% orig case color. Trigger guard and top lever about 60% orig blue, silvering in areas of normal wear. Screw slots are good, showing some use. Stocks show most of orig finish w/ oil rubbed in over the years, and nicks and dings from use. Checkering is slightly worn. Bores are bright and shiny w/ few scattered very shallow pits toward breeches. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. CASE is good. Straps and handle are good. Interior partitions and cloth are good. A very fine little gun in a very desirable gauge and in great condition. 4-35895 MGM107 (27,500-35,000)
