(Gunmakers) Ltd.” and “Orange St. Gunworks, Leicester Square, London.” on tops, with 1-1/2″ triangles of scroll engraving at breech ends. Bbls are fitted with matted quarter rib with nicely filed transition to mid rib. One standing, two folding leaf express rear sight has platinum lines, and graduations for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Bead front sight with flip-up night sight is longitudinally dovetailed into a matching matted base. Bbl flats have London nitro proofs for “405” 2.58″ and 47 grains cordite and 300 grain bullet. SN is engraved on reinforced loop. Sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Webley long bar boxlock action features non-automatic safety (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, and square shouldered doll’s head third bite, held by extension of top lever. “E. J. Churchill” is in ribands on either side of action which has nearly full coverage of small interwoven English scroll. Blued floorplate has matching scroll with device of attentive lion holding a shield. and with some Hindi script under floorplate screw. Top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard are scroll engraved, with SN on tang of trigger guard, which extends to engraved steel grip cap. Slightly figured European walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over Silvers type pad with nicely shaped shadow line cheekpiece. There is a sling loop, and vacant silver oval on toe line. Grip checkering is at approx. 20 LPI with mullered borders. Side panels are also checkered, and are borderless. Matching splinter forend attaches to bbl with front lever. SN is engraved on iron. Drop at heel: Approx 2-1/4″, drop at comb: Approx 1-5/8″. Weight: 9 lbs. 7 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. Old oak and leather case with scalloped brass corners has central round medallion on lid, and push button lock. Oak frame is reinforced with inlet brass corners and hinge guides. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth with paper label. There is an oak covered compartment which is currently holding the straps. PROVENANCE: GUNNER WOOD COLLECTION. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain nearly all of a good quality rust blue, but polishing lines are evident. Action is mostly silver gray with traces of case color in protected areas. Top lever, safety button, floorplate, trigger plate, trigger guard, and grip cap are re-blued, and retain nearly all of that blue. Stocks have virtually all of an older hand rubbed oil finish with a few very minor marks. Checkering has been re-cut. It looks as if the action cheeks have been pinned, but on very close inspection it is hard to really tell without disassembling the gun. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Bores are very good, strong rifling, dark in grooves. Case leather is dark (but has been stabilized), with many compressions and scuffs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth shows some moth damage, rubs from contact with guns, and areas where partitions have been moved around. Reproduction label is clean. A solid little rifle which should still shoot quite well. 4-39186 MGM47 (12,500-17,500)
