SISTER AGNES BERCHMANS (Canadian, 1879-1973) ST. VINCENT DE PAUL ACCEPTING THE CHAINS OF A GALLEY SLAVE LEON JOSEPH. Extremely large, unframed oil on canvas religious scene shows a clergyman in black robe being shackled to a chain and ball by two prisoners. Two men from the King are watching over the process while several prisoners peer through a steel grated window. Signed lower left “Bonat” “Sr. Agnes Berchmans 1921″. After a painting by Leon Bonnat. Sister Agnes Berchmans, born Julia Alma Landry, entered the Sisters of Charity while a teenager. Her order, recognizing her talents, sent her to Italy to study with Filadelfo Simi. SIZE: 96″ x 77”.
