R. FENTON BAKER-TYPE RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal. .640 Bore diameter. This high quality rifle is in the style of the famous Baker rifles, but with refinements not found on the military type. (It was probably ordered by an officer.) 30″ Octagonal barrel is fitted with one standing, one front folding rear sight with raised platinum lines. (Blackmore lists Richard Fenton, Gun maker, 1792-1815, who devised improved rifle sights by incorporating platinum strip.) Short post front sight is dovetailed through front portion of bbl, which is also cut for a hood. Bbl has London proofs on bottom flats. Under-rib is mounted with two beaded thimbles, and has a hole though rib for sling loop. Rosewood ramrod has horn tip and capped brass tail with worm. Patent breech has platinum lined touch hole, inlaid platinum line around breech end, and inset platinum poincon with “Fenton London” in raised lettering. Sporting type lock has waterproof pan, bridled frizzen, roller spring with teardrop finial, French cock, and rear sliding safety. Lockplate has rebated tail, some scroll engraving, and line borders. “R. Fenton” is engraved under pan. Heavy brass trigger guard transitions into scrolled grip, similar to the Baker rifle. Bow is engraved with stand of arms. Shallow crescent-shaped brass buttplate has faceted top tang. There is a brass patchbox cover on right side of stock in 1805 Baker style, engraved with leaf pattern border, and nicely cut stand of arms on cover. Brass thimble has feather engraving, and forestock fastens to bbl with side nail through brass oval escutcheons. Drop at heel: Approx. 1-1/2″, drop at comb: Approx. 1-3/8″. Weight: 9 lbs. 1 oz, LOP 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Good. Bbl is pitted over its entire surface, with edges slightly rounded, and has been cleaned to silver. Some pitting pattern has been added to top flats. Lock is cleaned to silver. Brass is a pleasing dark gold. Stock has most of an old finish, with numerous fairly heavy marks and dings. Lock and frizzen are crisp. Rifling is strong. Bore is quite bright, but slightly pitted and worn at muzzle. 4-40624 MGM80 (5,000-7,000)
