Calcutta. & 50 Stafford St. Birmingham.” on top of left bbl. Top of right bbl is inlaid in gold English script “Rana Sheoraj Singh Bahadur of Khajurgaon Rai Bareli”, the individual for whom the rifle was made (Born 1865. Knight Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire). Bbls are fitted with matted quarter rib with square shouldered doll’s head extension. Rib is fitted with one standing, three folding leaf express sight, with platinum lines, graduated from 100 to 500 yards. Claw mount scope bases are dovetailed and screwed into rib. Steel ramped square front sight blade is longitudinally dovetailed into Holland style front base. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, “- Gussstahl Krupp Essen -“, and provisional proofs. Bbl flats have Birmingham nitro proofs for 400 nitro express, 60 grains of cordite, and 400 grain bullet. Importer’s mark “Maywood Gun, Indep. Mo” is on side of left bbl. Breech ends of bbls have 2″ triangles of open acanthus and scroll engraving. Coin finished Webley screw grip action with reinforcing bolsters features bolted automatic safety (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), top strap elongated over comb, bushed strikers, and double triggers. Action is engraved with a mixture of high relief and normal rather naive game scenes in jungle background. Right side of action depicts, in high relief, a charging rather corpulent lion, with stag and hind watching with extreme interest. Left side depicts a tiger stalking some antelope. Floorplate is in standard relief, and depicts a pair of tigers, one taking down a hapless hind, with a pair of stags escaping in the background. Fences are carved in high relief, scroll and acanthus, as is top lever. Trigger guard is engraved with wild boar on bow, and prowling tiger on grip, with SN on rock in background. Guard tang extends to engraved steel grip cap. Nicely marbled European walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/16″ over Silvers type pad, and features a shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and 24 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is a vacant gold oval and sling eye on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Baker ejectors, and is attached to bbl with front pivoting lever. SN is on iron. Drop at heel: Approx 3-1/4″, drop at comb: Approx. 1-13/16″. Weight: 10 lbs. 4 oz, LOP 14-5/16″. Nickel Supra 2-1/2 X scope with post and crosshair reticle and windage adjustment, is in soldered-on claw bases. Leather case with brass corners, is embossed on lid “Kunwar Simran Singh. Bahadour.” with red and white Safari Club International sticker. Interior is lined in maroon cloth, with Manton and Company paper label, and contains 2 horn handled turn screws, round pewter oil bottle, pair of snap caps, leather wallet containing cleaning brushes, and a Parker Hale 2-pc cleaning rod. Cardboard box containing spare sights is included. With the rifle are a number of targets showing that this rifle shoots very well, and 3 boxes of Kynoch ammunition. Canvas case cover included with lot. PROVENANCE: Targets and ammo. CONDITION: Very fine, as refinished. Bbls retain 90-95% of a high quality rust blue, with a couple areas of light pitting towards front of left bbl. Engraving is slightly washed. Action has been coin finished and retains virtually all of that finish. Wood retains nearly all of a professionally done rubbed oil finish with numerous minor marks from handling and use. Wood is below metal. Checkering has been correctly re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Bores are fine, rifling strong, but dark in grooves. Scope is excellent. Caps are silvering. Optics are clear. Case is fine with stains, scrapes, abrasions, and tape marks. Cloth is fine with some cuts from contact with rifle. Partitions are mostly tight, with some minor partitions loose. Label is slightly foxed, with area cut from contact with rear sight. Accessories are fine. A nicely balanced rifle with a lot of appeal in what is now a very popular caliber, as cartridges are being made by Hornady. 4-39173 MGM48 (15,000-25,000)
