RARE, MASSIVE GRUDCHOS & EGGERS 4 BORE DANGEROUS GAME OR “WHALING” RIFLE. SN 104. Cal. 1.025 Groove diameter. This firm existed from before 1855 until 1860. Their specialty being whaling guns, they also produced target rifles, and obtained a patent for a bomb lance. This very unusual rifle would take a true one inch ball weighing 4 oz. (4 to the pound or 4 bore). Just the thing for your arctic expedition, where you may need to harvest a walrus for meat, skin, or ivory; deter a polar bear intent on consuming you for dinner; or even ultimately dispatch leviathan. 23″ Barrel (including breech) is octagonal at rear (two inches across flats). It changes to round 7″ from breech (diameter 1.85), and tapers to muzzle (diameter 1.44). Top flat is stamped “Grudchos & Eggers N. Bedford Mass” and “Cast – Steel”. Top left flat is stamped with no. “104”. Single standing leaf U-notch rear sight is dovetailed through front of octagonal portion of bbl, with brass bead at muzzle. This rifle was obviously meant to be accurate out to about 100 yards. Percussion breech plug has scrolled detonating with screw for clean-out, and is fitted with a square bossed nipple. Large back action lock with rounded serpentine hammer is stamped with makers name and address. With the exception of large lanyard ring on toe line, all furniture is brass, including long tang buttplate (stamped with “104” on toe), trigger guard and forend tip. There is no provision for a ramrod. Bbl mounts to forepiece with large side nail through oval brass escutcheons. Nicely shaped and finished plain, but dense American walnut stock measures 13-5/8″ LOP. Weight: 16 lbs. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbl retains most of its original brown, darkened and freckled. Breech plug retains 30-50% original case color, thinned and silvering with some dark areas of cleaning. Lockplate retains case color in protected areas, is pewter gray, turning brown toward tail. Brass parts are nicely toned. Stock retains nearly all of its original oil finish, and is exceptionally fine. There is one small crack repaired on left side of breech plug tang, and 2 fairly deep compressions on bottom right grip. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny, darkened and frosted toward muzzle. Lock is crisp. This impressive rifle balances and handles quite well, and could be carried fairly comfortably, and be ready for instant use, suspended from a sling loop over your right shoulder. 4-40875 MGM111 (6,000-12,000)
